Diamond State Curling Club is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the teaching, promotion, and development of the sport of curling. Founded in March of 2016, we have been curling out of our current location, the Patriot Ice Center, since September of 2016. We are Delaware’s first and only curling club. We host introduction to curling classes, private and corporate events, and member curling leagues.
our history
In the summer of 2015, members of Jersey Pinelands Curling Club advertised a few weeks of curling classes and pick-up games at Skating Club of Wilmington under the name Wilmington Curling Club. Volunteers from Jersey Pinelands and Philadelphia Curling Club taught interested Delawareans the sport of curling and organized games over the course of the summer. Wilmington Curling Club was not an official entity, but was meant to determine the level of interest in Delaware for forming a curling club. At the close of the summer names and emails were taken of the Delawareans interested enough in the sport to form a club in the future.
In February of 2016, those Delawareans still interested in forming a curling club were called to Stewart’s Brewing Company for our first meeting. There we formed our first Board of Directors and collected loans and donations from members of our new club. Over the next several weeks we voted on our new name and submitted our Certificate of Incorporation under our new name, Diamond State Curling Club.
Over the summer of 2016 we ran intro classes and played some pick up games at Fred Rust Ice Arena at the University of Delaware. After the summer was over the ice availability at Fred Rust was insufficient to support a growing club, and so we moved just a few short miles away to The Pond. We continued to grow at The Pond, curling first on their Olympic Rink, then on their NHL Rink. The Pond has changed ownership twice since we’ve been there, renaming themselves along the way to the Patriot Ice Center.
Our club membership grew to 70+ members by early 2020. When the world shut down from the Covid-19 pandemic we had 3 teams attending the Francis Dykes Memorial Bonspiel in Charlotte, NC. Over the course of the pandemic the membership kept in touch over zoom, playing web based curling video games, and Irish Road Bowling in state parks, masked and socially distanced. We returned to the ice in June of 2021, back on Patriot Ice Center’s Olympic Rink, with only 24 members. We’ve spent the last several years rebuilding, teaching curling to more and more Delwareans. As of January 2025, we are only a few members shy of our previous peak membership.
Diamond State has become known as a highly active arena club in the greater curling community. We pride ourselves on our performance on and off the ice, and have built our culture around fun and community. Our goal is always to have fun and “win the warm room” when playing against other clubs. In addition to league play, our members attend multiple bonspiels a year throughout the Grand National Curling Club region, and beyond. We organize “friendlies” with many surrounding clubs, and host our own annual bonspiel, the 302 Spiel, every summer.
The curling community is full of kind, supportive, fun, social people and Diamond State Curling Club fits right in. If that sounds like the type of community you’d like to be a part of, come join us!
